Nvidia has just made a significant announcement for games across the globe. According to the latest announcement, the company has just reduced the crypto mining capabilities of the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. This move will likely ensure that RTX 3060 GPUs are less attractive to cryptocurrency miners across the globe. In addition, the company has just launched a new set of cards called Nvidia CMP just meant for mining. Nvidia CMP or Cryptocurrency Mining Processor is a complete lineup of cards dedicated to mining. The company hopes that this will help with the GPU shortage across the globe. Separating the cards for gaming and mining will likely ensure that gamers can get their hands on the GeForce cards. Nvidia limits hash rate on upcoming GeForce RTX 3060, details
According to the announcement, the RTX 3060 software will detect “specific attributes” to identify if the buyer is mining cryptocurrency. In such a case, the card will limit the “hash rate”, or the mining efficiency “by around 50 percent”. This means that miners using RTX 3060 will need twice as many cards to get the same number of crypto hashes. Currently, the only cryptocurrency Nvidia has outlined as part of the detection is Ethereum. This is because it has 'the highest global mining yield for any GPU--mineable coin'.
The company has not stated if it is working on a similar solution for other cryptocurrencies out there like Bitcoin and more. In a statement to The Verge, Nvidia also stated that it will not reduce the hash rates of exiting GPUs like the RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080, or 3090. However, Nvidia stopped shy of stating if it will launch future GPUs with reduced hash rates.
It is worth noting that the company is already aware of the different use cases of its GeForce GPUs. Some of these include weather simulation, gene sequencing, deep learning, robotics, and more. As reported previously, the company is all set to launch its upcoming GeForce RTX 3060 GPU on February 25. Nvidia has already shared the specifications, pricing, and availability details for the RTX 3060 in the past. Though this move is good, we are not sure if it will help if Nvidia diverts its resources in creating the CMP lineup.
Nvidia CMP lineup for mining
Nvidia stated that its CMP lineup of cards does not do graphics and is only meant for crypto mining. The company also claims that these cards won’t feature the specifications of the GeForce GPUs likely helping the availability issues. The CMP lineup won’t come with display output and feature better airflow so miners can densely pack them. In addition, these cards will also come with “lower peak core voltage and frequency” for power efficiency, and more.
As per the announcement, the CMP lineup includes four products including 30HX, 40HX, 50HX, and 90HX. 30HX and 40HX will land in Q1 with the rest two will land in Q2 2021. Miners can purchase the cards from authorized partners like Asus, Colorful, EVGA, GigaByte, MSI, and more.
